The role in one line

You’ll build incident.io‘s security function from the ground up, creating a product secure enough to support some of the best engineering teams in the world when things are going wrong.

What that looks like day to day

We built a new security team from scratch this year. We’re now three people, and we’re looking for our final two. We’re generalists at heart, but for these roles we want people who can primarily focus on cloud security.

The work is greenfield and you’ll be deciding how security gets done at incident from first principles. There’s very little process here today which means you can move quickly rather than fight your way through approval chains and you’ll have real autonomy over how you approach the work.

We think of security as something that helps the business move, not something that slows it down. That means saying yes wherever we genuinely can, while still having the authority to block a release when something matters enough.

We’re heavy adopters of AI, and this role sits right in the middle of that. You’ll have an unlimited Claude token budget to speed up your own work, review, testing, threat modelling, and you’ll also be responsible for securing the AI features and AI driven workflows we’re shipping into the product.

Who you are

You’re a generalist with a strong grounding in security, and real depth in cloud security specifically.
You communicate well, you can deliver a hard piece of feedback to an engineer and have them thank you for it
You’ve got grit, you’re building this function from close to scratch, and the hard days, the scary find in production, the process that doesn’t exist yet, don’t put you off

Security Engineer

Era4 develops, owns and operates AI infrastructure across the UK, powered by renewable energy. Converting legacy industrial and energy sites into modern data-centre facilities, Era4 is combining brownfield regeneration opportunities with cleaner, efficient, scalable compute capacity for healthcare, research, finance, enterprise, and public-sector organisations.

We are seeking a Security Engineer to design, implement, and continuously improve security controls across our next-generation AI infrastructure and datacentre operations. This role focuses on protecting Kubernetes-based and cloud-native environments, securing our datacentre networking and infrastructure stack, strengthening security posture, identifying and mitigating risks, and enabling secure software delivery practices.

You will work closely with engineering, platform, and operations teams to integrate security into Era4’s proprietary cloud infrastructure, datacentre networks, CI/CD pipelines, containerized workloads, GPU-accelerated compute, and AI/ML platforms. The successful candidate will combine hands-on technical expertise with a proactive approach to threat detection, vulnerability management, and security automation across our brownfield-to-modern bare metal and cloud infrastructure environments.

Key Responsibilities:

Cloud & Infrastructure Security

Design, implement, and maintain security standard and controls for on prem Kubernetes.
Review infrastructure architectures and perform security assessments to identify risks and recommend mitigations.

Application & DevSecOps Security

Integrate security controls into CI/CD pipelines, including SAST, DAST, dependency scanning, container image scanning, and secrets detection.
Partner with development teams to implement secure coding practices and remediate security findings.
Conduct threat modelling and security reviews for new applications, services, and infrastructure changes.

Vulnerability & Risk Management

Lead vulnerability identification, prioritisation, remediation, and reporting activities across infrastructure and applications.

Detection & Response

Develop and maintain security monitoring, alerting, detection capabilities and incident response playbooks.
Investigate security incidents, perform root cause analysis, and coordinate remediation activities.

Security Automation

Build automation to improve security monitoring, compliance validation, vulnerability management, and incident response workflows.
Leverage Infrastructure as Code and policy-as-code frameworks to enforce security standards at scale.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Experience in Security Engineering, Cloud Security, DevSecOps, Infrastructure Security, or Datacentre Security.
Hands-on experience with vulnerability management platforms and security assessment methodologies.
Familiarity with CI/CD security controls, secure software development practices, and supply chain security.
In-depth scripting and automation skills using Python, Bash, or similar languages.

Nice to have:

Experience securing AI/ML or GPU-based infrastructure, datacentre network security, firewalls, and network segmentation (Palo Alto firewalls, OpnSense, Nokia networking, or similar).
Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, NIST CSF, CIS Benchmarks, or PCI DSS.
Experience with threat modelling, penetration testing, or red team engagements.
Security certifications such as CISSP, GSEC, GCIH, GCIA, CCSK, CCSP, or relevant cloud security certifications.

Systems Architect

We are seeking a Systems Architect to define, design, and govern the architecture of our Kubernetes-based AI infrastructure. This role is responsible for translating business, customer, and regulatory requirements into scalable platform designs and technical specifications that guide platform engineering and operations teams.

Work closely with Product Managers, Platform Engineers, ML engineers, and leadership to ensure the platform is secure, performant, resilient, and future-proof, enabling AI workloads at national-scale.

This is an opportunity to define the end-to-end architecture of our AI platform, defining how Kubernetes, GPU infrastructure, networking, storage, and automation components integrate into a cohesive system.

This is a design authority role, responsible for:

Platform blueprints
Technical standards
System-level decisions
Long-term scalability and evolution

Provide clear specifications and boundaries that enable Platform Engineers to build and operate the platform effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

Platform Architecture & Design Authority:
Produce high-level and low-level designs (HLDs/LLDs) for platform components.
Establish reference architectures for multi-tenant AI workloads.
Specify system and integrations across Kubernetes, IAM, PaaS, Observability and automation, ITSM, Security, Billing – the complete cloud service provider stack.
Define solutions for multi-tenant SaaS offerings for GPU cloud related offerings.

Scalability, Reliability & Performance:

Provide inputs for SLOs/SLAs across: Infrastructure, SaaS services, Storage services.
Architect: Capacity planning (compute + storage), Performance optimisation across workloads.

Essential Experience:

Proven results designing scaled end to end systems (not just components, or end services).
An expert of infrastructure, cloud, or platform related Architecture/Engineering.
Exceptional experience designing Kubernetes and cloud native solutions at scale.
Commercial aptitude to enable performance, cost, time trade-offs and evolutions.
Proven experience defining target architectures and technology roadmaps.
Strong understanding of Infrastructure-as-code, automation, GitOps.
Experience of Open Source stacks including scale-out storage/object stores (Ceph).

One or more would be an advantage:

Contribution to open-source projects in the IaaS/PaaS space.
Experience of building and consuming significant cloud services.
Commercial success of turning technology into a commercially successful product offering.
