About the Engineering Team
With 400+ engineers across Monzo, we’re building one of the most advanced in-house banking platforms in the world. From customer-facing products to payments infrastructure, fraud detection, and internal tools, our engineers tackle complex challenges that shape the future of banking.
We work in cross-functional squads within broader collectives like Core Banking, Business Banking, Wealth, Borrowing, Growth, Platform, Payments, Financial Crime, Security, and Expansion. After a shared hiring process, we’ll match you to a team where your skills, interests, and impact will align best.
We also contribute to open-source and regularly share our work through our engineering blog.
What You’ll Do
As a Backend Engineer III, you’ll work within a squad alongside product managers, designers, mobile and web engineers, data specialists, and others to deliver impactful solutions. Your work will involve:

Designing, building, and maintaining backend services and APIs

Contributing to scalable, secure, and resilient distributed systems

Using data and customer feedback to drive product decisions

Collaborating across disciplines to support rapid, safe delivery
We use technologies like:

Go (primary language – no prior experience required)
-
Cassandra, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, GCP, and Envoy Proxy

React (for internal tools and public-facing web apps)
What We’re Looking For
You should apply if you:

Have solid experience developing the backend of modern tech products

Understand the value of great UX and product-led thinking

Are familiar with typed languages (e.g. Go, Java, C++, Scala, etc.)

Enjoy working in fast-paced, cross-functional teams

Are curious, adaptable, and motivated to learn

Care deeply about solving customer problems
