About Our Engineering Team

Monzo’s engineering team is ~300 strong, forming the heart of our ~2,500-person company. We work in highly collaborative, cross-functional squads, and we embrace flexibility: whether you want to move between teams or deepen your expertise in one area, we support your growth.

What You’ll Be Working On

As a Staff Backend Engineer, you’ll play a key role in shaping the future of our products. You’ll work in a squad alongside product managers, researchers, designers, analysts, and engineers across disciplines. You’ll help build systems that deliver real value to our customers and scale efficiently as we grow.

You could be placed within any of our collectives (self-organised business units of ~100 people), including:

• Money

• Borrowing

• Fincrime

• Customer Operations

• Platform

• Personal Banking

• Business Banking

Tech Stack

We work with a modern, robust stack designed for scale and performance:

• Go for backend services

• Cassandra for persistent storage

• Kafka for asynchronous messaging

• Envoy Proxy for RPC

• Kubernetes & Docker to deploy and manage our microservices

• AWS powers most of our infrastructure

• React for internal tools and dashboards

• Two physical data centres to support integrations with third parties

Your Day-to-Day Might Include:

• Collaborating with cross-functional teammates to design and build new features

• Developing scalable, resilient backend services in Go

• Designing distributed systems and contributing to architectural decisions

• Improving performance, reliability, and observability of our platform

• Mentoring other engineers and helping shape our engineering culture

• Working closely with product teams to shape the future of our app

You Should Apply If:

• You have strong experience building backend systems for real-world products

• You’re excited to work on something that people use every day

• You have a product mindset and focus on solving customer problems

• You enjoy navigating ambiguity and working collaboratively in a cross-functional environment

• You’re interested in distributed systems, scalability, and performance

• You’ve worked with strongly-typed languages like Go, Java, Scala, or C

No formal qualifications or degrees required—just a passion for engineering and learning.

Interview Process

Our hiring process is thoughtful, inclusive, and designed to reflect real work:

1. Initial call with a recruiter

2. Take-home task or pair coding exercise

3. Final stage with two parts:

   • System design interview

   • Values & behavioural interview
