Technical Project Engineer job in Burton upon Trent – DOE

A leading engineering services organisation is seeking a Technical Project Engineer to support the successful delivery of complex MEP (Mechanical, Electrical & Public Health) projects across commercial, infrastructure, and highly regulated environments.

This role sits within the pre-construction and project delivery function, providing technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle. You’ll work closely with project managers, design teams, site teams, and clients to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, review, and coordinate electrical engineering designs for construction and building services projects.
  • Produce and assess electrical calculations, schematics, single-line diagrams (SLDs), equipment schedules, and technical specifications.
  • Ensure designs comply with BS 7671, building regulations, and relevant industry standards.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, public health, architectural, and structural teams to deliver fully coordinated project solutions.
  • Support design reviews and resolve technical clashes using engineering drawings, BIM models, and 3D coordination tools.
  • Prepare technical submissions, specifications, and documentation for client approval.
  • Review supplier proposals, technical submissions, and equipment selections to ensure compliance and suitability.
  • Provide technical guidance to project managers, supervisors, and installation teams throughout project delivery.
  • Support installation planning, sequencing, methodology development, and technical issue resolution on-site.
  • Assist with change management processes and engineering modifications during project execution.
  • Contribute to testing and commissioning activities, ensuring systems are validated and documented correctly.
  • Produce and review O&M manuals, as-built documentation, and project handover packages.
  • Support feasibility studies, site surveys, cost planning activities, and project pricing exercises.
  • Engage with suppliers and subcontractors to resolve technical queries and identify value engineering opportunities.
  • Assist in the development of RAMS, risk assessments, and mitigation strategies for engineering risks.
  • Promote continuous improvement and maintain awareness of evolving industry regulations and best practices.

Skills & Experience

  • Experience supporting the delivery of mechanical and electrical (M&E) or building services projects.
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles and installation practices.
  • Experience working within commercial, defence, industrial, infrastructure, or large-scale construction environments.
  • Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams and stakeholders.
  • Experience reviewing technical drawings, calculations, and engineering documentation.
  • Strong organisational, planning, and project coordination skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining high attention to detail.
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of project delivery objectives.

Technical Knowledge

  • BS 7671 Wiring Regulations.
  • Building services engineering principles.
  • Electrical design and installation standards.
  • BIM and 3D coordination processes.
  • Testing and commissioning procedures.
  • Engineering risk management.
  • Technical compliance and quality assurance.
  • Value engineering methodologies.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience delivering projects within defence, infrastructure, or highly regulated sectors.
  • Knowledge of NEC and JCT contract frameworks.
  • Experience supporting pre-construction activities and bid development.
  • Familiarity with cost planning and project estimating.
  • Understanding of construction project lifecycle management.

Qualifications

  • Degree, HNC, HND, or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Professional membership or working towards chartership would be advantageous.
